Knowledge vs Cloud vs Cultural Heritage

Paolo Nesi (paolo.nesi@unifi.it)

In the last years we have assisted to the convergence of knowledge, cloud and cultural heritage, mainly observing and realizing that cultural heritage is knowledge and knowledge is coming toward to be more accessible and easily managed into cloud. My point of view is mainly ICT, even if I am been contaminated by several cultural heritage large projects in the area of music modeling (MOODS), music notation and multimedia, music coding (MPEG SMR), multimedia IPR protection (AXMEDIS), and recently in performing arts modeling and media distribution with http://www.ECLAP.eu[1] project and services and MyStoryPlayer for the performing arts [2]. Only in the recent experience, the knowledge produced and converted, started to be cumulated and managed on cloud. ECLAP on this aspect was probably one of the first in modeling and moving on cloud metadata and files, and making them accessible as linked open data of performing arts on cloud, for all accessible; immediately followed by Europeana Cloud, Getty, Cultura Italia, and many others. Finally, a network of linked data services is growing, and could be accessible for all. Then we moved on modeling knowledge and providing smarter tools for general management and navigation with Linked Open Graph, which is a LD and LOD collaborative browser and tool [3], http://log.disit.org. The linked open data allow the full browsing of knowledge among several cloud infrastructures and the user even lost the perception of the fact that the LOG browser of LOD is passing from one RDF repository on cloud to another or is querying multiple RDF stores providing connected graphs (using SPARQL).  This is probably a starting point and not a point of arrival. The starting point of a revolution by which the knowledge on cloud will be more easily accessible and searchable. The main limitations now are on the complexity by which the knowledge is moved and uploaded on cloud in way it can be accessible to all. Interoperable solutions, interoperable knowledge models and tools, smart tools are still needed to be created. This is the direction, towards which we are projecting our research challenges.
